PENDIDIKAN MULTIKULTURAL DI PONDOK PESANTREN: MENUMBUHKAN TOLERANSI DALAM BINGKAI KEISLAMAN (STUDY KASUS DI PONDOK PESANTREN MIFTAHUL ULUM SUREN WILAYAH AL- MUNAWWAROH)

Abstract

Amid the increasing challenges of intolerance and the potential for conflict arising from socio-cultural differences, educational efforts are needed to foster mutual respect within Islamic boarding schools. Cultural, linguistic, and regional diversity among students is an inseparable aspect of life in pesantren. Such conditions require the development of tolerance to maintain harmonious social relationships among students. This study aims to analyze the implementation of multicultural education in fostering students’ tolerance at Miftahul Ulum Suren Islamic Boarding School, Al-Munawwaroh Region. This research employed a qualitative approach using a case study design. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving boarding school administrators and students. The findings reveal that multicultural education is implemented through various collective activities, including religious studies, congregational prayers, school activities, and daily interactions in the dormitory. Differences in regional background, language, and the existence of four boarding school regions do not hinder social interaction among students. Instead, these differences become a means of learning to develop mutual respect, cooperation, and ukhuwah Islamiyah (Islamic brotherhood). Tolerance is reflected in students’ ability to live harmoniously, help one another, and maintain positive relationships despite their diverse backgrounds. These findings indicate that multicultural education based on Islamic values can serve as an alternative educational strategy for fostering tolerant character and strengthening harmonious social life in diverse educational environments.
