PESANTREN DI KABUPATEN JEMBER SEBAGAI LABORATORIUM TOLERANSI: KAJIAN LITERATUR TENTANG PERANNYA DALAM PENGUATAN MODERASI BERAGAMA

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) play a strategic role in promoting religious moderation through Islamic education that fosters tolerance, balance, and respect for diversity. However, studies examining the role of pesantren in Jember Regency remain fragmented across various publications and have not yet been comprehensively synthesized. This study aims to analyze and synthesize previous research on the role of pesantren in Jember Regency as laboratories of tolerance in strengthening religious moderation. This study employed a qualitative method using a library research approach. Data were collected through documentation of five journal articles and two conference papers selected purposively based on predetermined inclusion criteria and analyzed using a descriptive-synthesis approach. The findings reveal that religious moderation is strengthened through the internalization of wasaṭiyyah values, character education, the exemplary role of kiai, institutional culture, students' daily habituation, and the utilization of digital media as educational and religious outreach platforms. The synthesis identified four main dimensions of strengthening religious moderation: education, institutional culture, leadership, and digital transformation. The study concludes that the integration of these four dimensions establishes pesantren as laboratories of tolerance that contribute to fostering peaceful, inclusive, and harmonious religious life within a pluralistic society.
