TOLERANSI DALAM ISLAM DI TENGAH WACANA PLURALISME AGAMA BERBASIS ISLAMIC WORLDVIEW

Abstract

This paper examines how the concept of tolerance in Islam can be properly understood amidst the discourse of religious pluralism, based on the framework of the Islamic worldview. The doctrine of religious pluralism, which forbids claims to the truth of one's own religion and regards all religions as equally true, ultimately leads to relativism, the notion that no truth is absolute. Islam itself does not endorse pluralism as such a theological doctrine, yet it acknowledges plurality as sunnatullah (a divine law of creation) and upholds a high degree of tolerance in social interaction. This study employs a library research method with a qualitative approach and conceptual analysis of Qur'anic exegesis, scholarly thought, and relevant scientific literature on religious tolerance from the perspective of the Islamic worldview. The findings show that Islam's position as rahmatan lil 'alamin (a mercy to all the worlds) cannot be interpreted as an acknowledgment of the truth of all religions, but rather lies in the universality of its teachings, which are consistent with human nature (fitrah). The Qur'an affirms Islam's position as the religion approved by Allah (QS. Ali Imran: 19), yet this affirmation does not negate a high degree of tolerance, which in fact has deep roots in the history of Islamic civilization. This paper contributes to the discussion of an accurate concept of tolerance, one that is not conflated with the doctrine of religious pluralism, within the framework of the Islamic worldview.
